About the Rooster

The first day of spring, the rooster made a resolution to speak only pure truth.

"Let the truth finally triumph over lies!" he thundered.

He decided to put this idea into practice on the farm.

At the barn, he met a ground squirrel. He immediately said:

"You are selfish! You think only of your own welfare!"

The ground squirrel was taken aback. He had never heard the rooster speak like that before.

     "Me?" he wondered.

"Yes, you! You live only for yourself. At the expense of our whole community."

The rodent was ashamed. He lowered his head and walked away silently.

"See! The seed has fallen on fertile ground," the rooster rejoiced.

He looked around for someone else to speak to his soul.

He spotted a black, well-fed tomcat. Majestically and nobly, it strode across the yard.

     The rooster confronted him:

"You are deceitful. All pretense. Corrupt. For a bowl of milk, you grovel to the farmer."

The cat could not believe his ears. He bristled and growled:

"You impolite fellow, how dare you insult me like that! You are very lucky that I just ate. Next time, you

better avoid me!"

     The cat quickly disappeared.

The farmer stepped out of the cottage. The rooster immediately caught his eye. The rooster was proudly

puffing up on the perch.

When the farmer approached closer, the rooster said: "You have butter on your head, wretch! Your wife is

cheating on you, putting horns on you."

The farmer's face turned red as a turkey's. Veins bulged in anger on his neck.

"Such an outrage! An impudence crying out to heaven! How can you speak so rudely about my faithful

wife! For such godly words, I will punish you!"

He grabbed the dear rooster and before it could recover, he placed it on the chopping block and cut off its

head with an axe.

"I'll show you, slandering respectable citizens!" said the master over the lifeless body.

Then he grabbed the creature by the claws and went back to the house. He was looking forward to a

tasty roast for dinner.

News of the rooster's death soon spread. All the animals gathered in the yard to remember the

unfortunate fate that befell their former companion.

The old and wise goat commented on the matter, saying:

"There have been countless of those who wanted to fight for the truth. They thought they could save the

world, but in the end, they all met a bad fate. It is sad that our poor rooster did not learn from the mistakes of

others."

     The animals nodded in agreement.
